Sustainability

Our Commitment to Sustainability and Climate Action here at Wittersham Church of England Primary School.

Sustainability in Education - K12 schools are leading the way

At Wittersham Church of England Primary School, we believe that caring for God’s creation is a shared responsibility. As part of our school vision and values, we are committed to helping our children understand the world around them, take positive action, and grow as responsible global citizens.

We are proud to be developing our School Climate Action Plan (CAP) — a clear and practical strategy for how we, as a school community, will reduce our environmental impact and build a more sustainable future.

What is a Climate Action Plan?

A Climate Action Plan sets out how we aim to:

  • Reduce our carbon footprint

  • Make better use of resources

  • Teach our children about sustainability and climate change

  • Involve the whole school community in caring for our planet

Our plan is guided by the Department for Education’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy and shaped by our pupils, staff, families, and governors.

What We’ve Been Doing

In June, we held our first ever Global Issues Week – an exciting and powerful whole-school event designed to spark thinking, reflection and action. Each class explored a different global theme, such as:

  • Climate change and deforestation

  • Pollution and plastic waste

  • Fair trade and ethical consumption

  • Biodiversity and endangered species

  • Clean water and sanitation

Pupils took part in debates, hands-on investigations, art projects and environmental pledges. They shared their learning during a celebration assembly and created displays to inspire change across our school.

This week helped launch our Climate Action Plan and reinforced the belief that even small actions – like switching off lights, reducing single-use plastic, or planting for pollinators – can lead to lasting change.

Our Key Climate Action Areas

Our Climate Action Plan focuses on:

  • Energy: Reducing electricity and heating usage through smarter choices and systems

  • Waste: Cutting down on waste and improving recycling across the school

  • Travel: Encouraging families to walk, cycle or use ‘park and stride’ options

  • Biodiversity: Creating wildlife-friendly outdoor learning spaces like bug hotels, hedgehog corridors, and wildflower patches

  • Curriculum: Building sustainability into learning across subjects and year groups

  • Pupil Leadership: Empowering our Eco-Council and School Council to lead meaningful initiatives

Why It Matters

By making sustainability part of everyday school life, we’re helping children develop a deep sense of responsibility, hope, and action. We want our pupils to believe they can make a difference – and to feel proud of doing so.

This work aligns with our Christian vision and values, nurturing courageous, compassionate learners who care for the world and those around them.

How Families Can Help

We’ll continue to share sustainability updates in the newsletter and on Class Dojo. Families can help by:

  • Supporting active travel

  • Using reusable containers in lunchboxes

  • Talking to children about environmental issues

  • Joining in with school eco projects and challenges

If you’d like to be more involved or have ideas to share, please do get in touch – we’d love to hear from you!
