PE and Sports Premium

Physical Education and Sports Premium

At Wittersham Church of England Primary School, PE is a vital part of our commitment to developing the whole child. We believe that physical education is not just about sport—it’s about building healthy habits, developing character, and helping each child to grow in confidence, resilience and self-belief.

PE and school sport support children in learning vital life skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, perseverance, and leadership. These skills have a positive impact across all areas of learning and help promote well-being, inclusion and a sense of belonging. As part of our Christian vision, we are committed to ensuring every child is supported to flourish—and for many, PE is a key part of that journey.

We use our Sports Premium funding to ensure that all children:

  • Experience high-quality physical education across all year groups

  • Develop fundamental movement skills and physical literacy

  • Are given opportunities to engage in a wide variety of sports and activities

  • Build positive attitudes towards being active, including for mental health and wellbeing

  • Have access to inclusive activities that support children of all abilities

The Primary PE and Sport Premium is additional government funding designed to improve the quality and sustainability of PE and sport in primary schools. The objective is to ensure:

“Self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools. The focus of spending must lead to long-lasting impact on the school’s PE provision and vision for physical activity that will continue beyond the lifetime of the funding.”

At Wittersham, we use this funding to:

  • Invest in staff CPD to improve the quality of teaching in PE

  • Develop our school swimming provision, including training and resources

  • Provide targeted activities to support engagement for less active pupils

  • Enhance equipment and lunchtime activity resources

  • Create structured opportunities for all pupils to take part in physical activity daily

  • Improve access to outdoor learning and movement-based wellbeing provision (e.g. Forest School)

Our approach is strategic and focused on impact—ensuring that Sports Premium spending leads to embedded, long-lasting change that benefits our current pupils and future generations. The progress of this provision is reviewed annually and reported to governors, with evaluation of impact shared with our wider community.
