Spiritual Leaders

At Wittersham Church of England Primary School, our Spiritual Leaders play an important role in nurturing and celebrating the Christian character of our school. This dedicated team of Year 6 pupils helps to ensure that our school vision and Christian values of Courage, Compassion and Cooperation are reflected throughout everyday school life.

Our Spiritual Leaders for 2026–2027 are Emily and Olivia, who have been elected to represent pupil voice and support the spiritual development of our school community.

Spiritual Leaders are encouraged to think deeply, ask thoughtful questions, share ideas and take an active role in shaping opportunities for worship, prayer and reflection.

Leading Worship and Spiritual Development

Working closely with our Headteacher and Worship Leader, Mrs Coulson, our Spiritual Leaders meet regularly to reflect on the spiritual life of Wittersham and explore ways to make collective worship meaningful, engaging and inclusive for everyone.

Their responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the planning, preparation and delivery of collective worship, helping pupils engage with Christian teachings and messages.

  • Exploring the Christian calendar and liturgical seasons, including Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and Pentecost, and considering how these can be celebrated throughout school.

  • Helping to lead whole-school Faith Days, providing opportunities for pupils to explore spirituality, faith and Christian values in creative and meaningful ways.

  • Taking an active role in services at St John the Baptist Church, strengthening our close relationship with our local church community.

  • Encouraging opportunities for prayer, stillness and personal reflection, recognising that spirituality can be experienced and expressed in different ways.

  • Gathering pupil voice about worship and spiritual development, ensuring that children have opportunities to shape and influence this important aspect of school life.

  • Acting as positive role models by demonstrating kindness, respect, compassion and a commitment to serving others.

Our Worship Leader – Mrs Coulson

As Headteacher and Worship Leader, Mrs Coulson works closely with our Spiritual Leaders, staff and wider church community to ensure that collective worship remains at the heart of life at Wittersham.

Mrs Coulson supports the planning and development of worship across the school, ensuring that it is invitational, inclusive and inspirational. Through carefully planned themes, Bible stories, reflection and prayer, worship provides opportunities for children to explore Christian teachings, consider important questions about life and develop their own sense of spirituality.

Our approach recognises and celebrates the diversity of beliefs, backgrounds and experiences within our school community. All children are welcomed and encouraged to participate in ways that are meaningful to them, developing respect, understanding and appreciation for the beliefs of others.

Growing in Faith, Leadership and Service

Being a Spiritual Leader is an opportunity for our oldest pupils to develop confidence, responsibility, empathy and leadership skills while making a meaningful contribution to the life of our school.

Through their work, our Spiritual Leaders help to create a caring, reflective and spiritually rich environment where every child feels valued, listened to and encouraged to flourish.

Together, our Spiritual Leaders and Mrs Coulson bring our school vision to life:

“On a voyage of discovery; learning and growing together in the light of God.”

At Wittersham, spirituality is not simply something we explore during collective worship. It is reflected in how we treat one another, the choices we make, the questions we ask and the ways in which we show Courage, Compassion and Cooperation each day.
