School Council

At Wittersham Church of England Primary School, our School Council plays an important role in ensuring that every child's voice is heard, valued and celebrated. With representatives from Reception through to Year 6, our School Council provides pupils with meaningful opportunities to influence decisions, share ideas and contribute to the continued development of our school.

Led by Miss Perrian, our School Council encourages pupils to take an active role in school life, developing their confidence, independence and leadership skills while promoting our Christian values of Courage, Compassion and Cooperation.

Pupil Voice at the Heart of Wittersham

Our School Councillors are elected to represent their classmates, providing an important link between pupils, staff and school leadership.

The School Council meets regularly to discuss ideas, celebrate successes and identify opportunities to make Wittersham an even better place to learn and grow.

Their responsibilities include:

  • Gathering ideas, suggestions and feedback from pupils across the school.

  • Leading Class Council discussions to ensure every child has an opportunity to contribute.

  • Sharing pupils' views on playground equipment, outdoor learning spaces and school facilities.

  • Contributing ideas to develop lunchtime activities, clubs and play opportunities.

  • Supporting discussions about school meals and menu choices.

  • Working alongside staff to identify and implement improvements across the school.

  • Promoting inclusion, kindness and cooperation throughout our school community.

  • Reporting back to their classmates about discussions, decisions and progress.

Through this approach, pupils experience democracy in action and develop an understanding of how their contributions can make a positive difference.

Our School Council in Action – 2026/2027

Our newly elected School Council has already made a fantastic start to the academic year!

During their first meeting with Miss Perrian, councillors introduced themselves, shared their reasons for wanting to represent their classmates and discussed how they would work together throughout the year.

Their first priority was exploring ways to enhance our playground equipment and playtime experiences. The children shared some wonderful ideas about the resources and activities they would like to see introduced.

Following the meeting, councillors returned to their classrooms to gather further feedback from their peers, ensuring that decisions are informed by the views of children across the whole school.

This collaborative approach is central to the work of our School Council. It ensures that pupils do not simply share their ideas but have opportunities to see how their suggestions can influence positive change.

Developing Confident, Responsible Leaders

Being a School Councillor is about much more than attending meetings. It provides children with valuable opportunities to develop communication, teamwork, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Our councillors learn to listen respectfully, appreciate different perspectives, represent the views of others and take responsibility for making improvements.

Through their work, they demonstrate that pupil leadership is not limited by age and that every child, from Reception to Year 6, can make a meaningful contribution to our school community.

Making a Difference Together

At Wittersham, we believe that children should be active participants in shaping their educational experiences.

Our School Council is an important part of our commitment to developing pupil autonomy, encouraging children to take ownership, demonstrate initiative and recognise the positive impact of their actions.

Together, our School Councillors help bring our school vision to life:

“On a voyage of discovery; learning and growing together in the light of God.”

We look forward to seeing the wonderful ideas and improvements our School Council will champion throughout the year!
