Eco Council

Our Eco Council 🌍🌱

At Wittersham Church of England Primary School, we believe that even the smallest actions can make a big difference to our planet. Our Eco Council plays an important role in helping us become a greener, more sustainable school, encouraging everyone in our community to take responsibility for caring for God's wonderful world.

Led by Miss Larter, our Eco Council brings together enthusiastic pupil representatives who are passionate about protecting the environment, reducing waste and inspiring positive change.

Through their leadership, our Eco Councillors have opportunities to develop confidence, responsibility, teamwork and problem-solving skills while making a meaningful contribution to the future of our school and wider community.

Our Eco Council in Action – 2026/2027

Our Eco Council officially launched in Term 1, marking an exciting new chapter in Wittersham's sustainability journey!

During their first meeting, councillors shared their ideas, discussed environmental challenges and identified priority areas they would like to focus on over the coming terms.

One of their first ambitions is to help Wittersham become a 'Plastic Clever School', taking practical steps to reduce single-use plastics, minimise waste and encourage more environmentally friendly choices throughout the school.

Our Eco Council will work together to:

  • Reduce plastic waste and promote reusable alternatives.

  • Encourage recycling, reusing and upcycling across the school.

  • Explore ways to reduce energy and water consumption.

  • Promote care for our school grounds, wildlife and natural environment.

  • Encourage sustainable choices in classrooms, at lunchtimes and during school activities.

  • Gather ideas and suggestions from pupils to ensure everyone can contribute.

  • Organise environmental campaigns and activities that inspire our whole school community.

Our Climate Action Plan – From Planning to Action!

At Wittersham, sustainability is an important part of our commitment to the future.

Our school Climate Action Plan was developed during the previous academic year, establishing clear priorities and targets to help us reduce our environmental impact and promote greater environmental awareness.

During 2026/2027, we are putting this plan into action!

Our Eco Council will play an important role in supporting these priorities, helping to turn our ambitions into meaningful, practical improvements.

By involving pupils in this work, we are ensuring that environmental responsibility becomes part of everyday school life rather than simply something we learn about in the classroom.

Developing Tomorrow's Environmental Leaders

Being an Eco Councillor is about much more than looking after our school environment. It is an opportunity for pupils to become advocates for positive change, developing the knowledge, skills and confidence to make responsible decisions.

Through their work, our Eco Councillors demonstrate our Christian values of:

  • Courage – speaking up for our planet and making positive changes.

  • Compassion – showing care for God's creation, wildlife and future generations.

  • Cooperation – working together to make our school and community more sustainable.

Small Actions, Big Differences!

We know that creating a more sustainable future requires everyone to play their part.

Our Eco Council will share regular updates, celebrate achievements and encourage families to join us in making environmentally responsible choices.

Together, we can make Wittersham a greener, cleaner and more sustainable place to learn and grow.
